Intel and HP unveil IA-64 ISA

By Tony Hallett

Intel and Hewlett-Packard (HP) have finally released details of the chip giant's IA-64 Instruction Set Architecture (ISA).

Merced, the first implementation of Intel's 64bit architecture, is not due to be available until next year, but yesterday's announcement will help developers design software for the processor which will go up against established 64bit offerings such as Alpha, now owned by Compaq, and Sun Microsystems' UltraSPARC.

Intel re-iterated IA-64 will be compatible with current Intel IA-32 and HP PA-RISC processors - a claim which competitors such as Sun have said fails to mention deterioration in applications' performance - and will meet demands for future Internet and e-business applications.

Intel recently set up a $250m venture capital fund aimed at nurturing companies developing applications for IA-64.

HP and Intel started the R&D for IA-64 in 1994.
