DAT to release 'black box' for trucks

Transport electronics firm, Diversified Auto Technology (DAT), is to launch an onboard device for motor vehicles which emulates aircraft 'black box' flight recorders.

The Vehicle Data Recorder System (VDRS) is a self-contained device which records data independently of a vehicle's other systems. It will incorporate accident recording, driver log-ins and anti-theft technologies, with add-in modules to feature cellular and satellite-based voice and data communications.

The first DAT products will be introduced in Europe by the end of the year, followed by a US roll-out.

DAT also says it is seeking a deal with Iridium, to include the firm's satellite technology in the VDRS. Such a deal would give Iridium access to nine million trucks and buses throughout the EU, all of which are soon to be legally obliged to carry onboard monitoring devices.
