Hitachi and NEC Corp, the Japanese chip giants, have announced an alliance to develop DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips.
The joint venture is aimed at reducing production and development costs, and the two companies believe the increased efficiency will help to revitalise their presence in the laggard Asian market.
In a written statement, Hitachi and NEC Corp claim increasing consolidation in the memory market between European, Asian and US companies means that alliances like this are the only way to remain cost-competitive while enhancing technological development.
