UK government to compensate holidaymakers

By Lisa Burroughes

Published: 28 June 1999 14:27 BST

The UK government plans to compensate holidaymakers who have to reschedule plans due to chaos in the Passport Agency, after it brought in computing giant, Siemens.

The agency is experiencing major delays, caused by attempts to fully automate the passport application process. Installation difficulties of the £120m computer system, coupled with changes to passport requirements, have created a huge backlog - 530,000 people are waiting to have their applications processed.

However, the immigration minister at the Home Office, Mike O'Brien, has said the government will make cash payments to anyone who has lost money by having to rearrange their holidays.
