KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is to use Sun/Netscape software to set up a fully Web-based procurement system.
The iPlanet interface, which replaces a variety of legacy systems and applications, will eventually be extended to all 27,000 employees in a multimillion pound deal.
KLM said an online-buying network would enable it to cut down on its 12,000 suppliers and build better relationships with them. It also hopes to cut costs on paper-based purchase orders and reduce unauthorised buying.
Sun/Netscape's European director of ecommerce, Cyrus Gilbert-Rolfe, said the system replaced a custom-built solution which was not scalable above 200 people.
