Intel has announced details of a processor range specifically aimed at networking hardware manufacturers, which focus on providing Internet infrastructure.

The chip giant plans to base the products on its Internet Exchange (IX) architecture, and will also establish a $200m communications fund to be invested in companies which develop systems and software based on the IX system.

The processor range is part of Level One communications' portfolio - a company recently bought by Intel. The flagship offering will be the IXP 1200 network processor, with 12 others to be announced at later dates.

The company said it hopes the chip will encourage faster and smarter Internet products.
