Pentium III 'Coppermine' has bug in boot-up

Intel has admitted there is a bug in the 'boot-up' mechanism of the new Pentium III processors, forcing the user to turn on the PC or hit the start button a second time.

Released on 25 October, the chip marks Intel's transition to 0.18-micron manufacturing technology working on smaller circuitry, faster speed and acting as less of a drain on resources (see 'First time features for upgraded Pentium III processors' http://www.silicon.com/a33555 ).

However, a spokesman for Intel has assured computer owners that a testing procedure is in place to detect faulty chips and the error will be fixed during the next stage of the manufacturing process. He insisted that the bug only affects one to two per cent of 'Coppermine' PIII processors.

As a precautionary measure, Dell temporarily halted the manufacturing of the latest Optiplex GX110 PCs until Intel devises a test to screen out chips with the flaw.
