Mobile chipmaker, Qualcomm, is to buy SnapTrack - a wireless tracking technology company - for $1bn.

Qualcomm said the buyout is designed to enable the development of applications for mobile location-based services using Wireless Assisted GPS (Global Positioning System) and its own gpsOne technology.

The services will support the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) mandate that wireless carriers provide for the location of wireless phones for 9-1-1 applications.

It will also be able provide customised location-specific services, such as traffic updates, and will be incorporated with Internet applications.
