Xerox and HP settle their differences

By John Oates

Published: 24 March 2000 17:21 GMT

HP and Xerox have agreed to settle their long-running patent suit out of court.

The companies have been involved in legal action since 1998 over six technological patents. Xerox had filed complaints against HP products that use inkjet, colour balancing and resolution enhancement technologies. HP had filed complaints against Xerox products that use touchscreen user interface, inkjet and image enhancement technologies.

In a joint statement, the companies said: "Both parties agreed to settle to avoid the costs, time and distractions of lengthy legal battles. With today's settlement, Xerox and HP can completely focus on meeting the needs of their customers and competing with each other in the marketplace, rather than in the courts."
