Intel devotee Dell is rumoured to be on the verge of offering PCs based on AMD's Athlon processor.
The rumour has been doing the rounds for several months, and took on a new lease of life when Dell attributed recent below-par quarterly results to problems with the supply of Pentium IIIs.
However, US news wires have claimed an analyst from Salomon Smith Barney said "Dell will use AMD as a second source to Intel," citing "serious supply discussions " between the management of the two companies.
AMD North European marketing manager, Richard Baker, said: "You'll have to talk to Dell about this. We can't say anything."
A Dell spokesman said: "We have nothing new to report."
But despite the reticence, sources close to the companies said the recent rumours are overplaying the chances of an agreement, and questioned the accuracy of the Salomon Smith Barney statement.
