IBM and Intel launch next wave of processors

Intel and IBM are set to launch processors that both companies claim will vastly improve performance over current products.

According to press reports, Intel is to launch the latest version of its Pentium III Xeon chipset, aimed at the high-end network server market. Intel claims the microprocessor will increase performance by as much 46 per cent.

IBM's new chip is based on a technology that reduces power consumption. The technology - called silicon on insulator (SOI) - uses a glass layer to prevent electrons running through a chip and escaping. A report on Cnet states the process could improve microprocessor performance by 20 to 30 per cent.

IBM is to incorporate the chip in its new range of AS/400 servers.
