NATS says sorry for air traffic chaos

By John Oates

Published: 22 June 2000 13:35 GMT

National Air Traffic Services has written to airlines apologising for the long delays suffered by passengers on Saturday, and warned them to expect further problems over the summer.

Software crash took three and a quarter hours to fix but the resulting backlog of flights took days to sort out. With the system down, operators had to revert to pen and paper to log flights manually.

It has also emerged that the aged mainframe system will form the basis of the new, and much delayed, centre in Swanwick.
