Car manufacturer Ford has chosen Qualcomm to help provide multimedia services for installation in its latest models.

The two companies will form a subsidiary, known as Wingcast, to develop navigation systems, anti-collision devices and mobile phones for the car industry.

Ford said it aimed to fit its technology into one million new vehicles such as pick-ups and cars by the end of 2002 and have general installation in all its models within four years.

Jac Nasser, director general at Ford described Wingcast as the vehicle for Ford's future in mobile communications, predicting the car will be the next mobile portal for accessing the internet.
