Disk storage demands could be massively reduced by software launched today from UniTree.
Published: 17 November 2000 14:25 GMT
Instead of archiving all data on disk, UniTree Database Near Line will move data from disk to tape or optical storage once it becomes inactive, freeing up expensive disk space.
Nigel Dear, European Director of Sales and Marketing for UniTree, said: "The process is transparent to the user. Using the Unix data stamp, data will be moved off to another medium when it is no longer needed."
If data is required for a query, then it will be reloaded to disk.
Dear added: "Given the price of Terabyte storage, companies now have an alternative to adding more disks."
Qualified to work with Oracle 8i, UniTree claims the product will work with virtually any database, including homegrown proprietary ones.
