Carphone Warehouse enjoys seasonal surge

Carphone Warehouse has doubled turnover and increased margins for the third quarter ended 30 December 2000.

Sales over the four week Christmas period were up 81 per cent, doubling Q3 sales to £335m, a 75 per cent increase on the previous year.

The rise compensated for the relatively slow uptake of WAP technology.

Charles Dunstone, chairman and CEO of Carphone Warehouse, said in a statement: "We continue to believe that the increasing complexity of products as the mobile data revolution evolves will support our core proposition of 'simple, impartial advice'."

Dunstone added: "We remain confident we will achieve full year results in line with market expectations."

Carphone Warehouse will issue its preliminary results on 29 May 2001.

Further to the firm's results, Carphone Warehouse announced Sir Brian Pitman would join the board, becoming the group's fourth non-executive director.

Pitman is currently chairman of Lloyds TSB and Next and is a non-executive director of Carlton Communications and the Tomkins Group.
