The games giant is planning to let its product loose on the market following a Japanese launch in July followed by the US launch in October.

However, Nintendo has already been beaten to the market by Microsoft's X-box and its arch rival Sony which issued its PlayStation 2 console this year amid a number of teething problems which caused delays to the launch and massive distribution problems in the run up to Christmas 2000.

A spokeswoman at Nintendo countered any suggestions of delays with the GameCube, stating that no firm release date has been announced, adding: "We are not intending to make the same mistakes as PlayStation."

The GameCube console includes a fully digital video output which will give the user a clearer picture and through the use of a component video format GameCube is compatible with the majority of high definition TV sets.
