IBM lays claim to 'tool kit' first

IBM is claiming to be the first company to offer a 'tool kit' that supports all open standards necessary for developing ebusiness applications.

IBM unveiled its WebSphere Technology today, claming it allows software developers to create ebusiness applications, such as database connections and transaction handling by reducing coding time.

The software will run on IBM web servers and include WebSphere Application Server for z/OS and OS/390 and CICS Transaction Server V2.1.

The focus on web services is being driven by a set of open standards which IBM developed alongside firms such as Ariba and Microsoft.

Tony Lock, senior analyst at Bloor Research, welcomed the news that IBM will collaborate with rival web services firms in developing web service software standards.

He said: "For the first time companies are working on interoperability up front, perhaps the web is making businesses more responsible and customer friendly.

"They're at last starting to recognise the commercial advantage of sharing information."
