Faulty server results in 3G trial breakdown in Japan

It's NTT Doh!CoMo...

NTT DoCoMo's eagerly anticipated 3G trials yesterday failed in Japan because of a fault in its email service.

According to the Japanese mobile giant, emails from PCs did not reach the new handsets in use by 3,300 trialists for a period of 18 hours because of a problem with a server in Yokohama.

This glitch follows the delay of the fully-fledged service from May until October because of 'software bugs' and the recent announcement of further delays for the release date of videophones, which are now not due to be released until later this month, for the same reason.

The problem also disrupted DoCoMo's i-mode service. However this was up and running again after only three hours, the company said.

DoCoMo has named the new 3G service Foma, or freedom of mobile multimedia access.
