Digital telly hit by double whammy

BBC and government gang up on digital TV...

Broadcasting minister Kim Howells and director-general of the BBC Greg Dyke both cast doubts on the government's pledge to turn off the analogue signal between 2006 and 2010.

Howells, quoted in the Financial Times, said he doubted whether this target was achievable. He also questioned the long-term future of funding the BBC through the licence fee.

He told the FT: "The expense of streaming images onto the internet is going to generate big demands for increases in the television licence then we've got to look at other ways of funding it: no question about it."

Greg Dyke added: "Our digital channels are not going to available in every for at least another decade."
