Culture secretary Tessa Jowell has approved BBC plans for eight new digital services

Three new TV channels and five radio services have been given the thumbs-up, but plans for a fourth TV channel - BBC Three which would replace BBC Choice - have been rejected.

The BBC has been advised to review BBC Three plans along with the current format of BBC News 24.

The new channels will be available free of charge for all BBC digital subscribers and will include two childrens' TV channels, BBC Four, which will replace BBC Knowledge, and five digital radio stations.

The new offerings will be subject to government conditions requiring a certain percentage of home grown programming and online support services.
