British company Cambridge Silicon Radio, which supplies 49 per cent of the world's bluetooth chips, is short of cash.

The company said the $65m of financing it has raised will run out by the end of next year as demand for the chips increases.

Chief executive John Hodgson told the Reuters news agency: "We need money for working capital. I'm sure we'll need additional funding before the end of 2002. Fortunately we don't have to raise it now."

The news came as the company unveiled its new range of bluetooth chips, with twice the range and half the power consumption of previous models.
