Is it the magic number?
Published: 3 July 2002 16:10 BST
UK 3G licence holder Hutchison 3G has unveiled its new name after months of deliberation and heavy investment in market research - it's called '3'.
It is not known exactly how much cash was spent researching the market's reaction to the very original name but it is thought that the number 3 brand is going to be as successful as PricewaterhouseCoopers' re-launch as 'Monday'.
Canning Fok, managing director of 3's Hong Kong-based holding company, Hutchison Whampoa said he hopes the world will not forget his UK telco's catchy title in a hurry.
Hutchison Whampoa had intended to keep the name a secret until Hutchison 3G launched inn the UK market, however the business has already delayed its launch twice after admitting that 3G technology was still not ready.
Inspiration for the new name is thought to have stemmed for the Asian predilection for astrologically motivated luck.
In numerology the number three points to the entertainers of the world, those who are effervescent and that have very optimistic attitudes, according to numerology expert, Michael McClain.
According to McClain's website the number three means: "You effectively cope with all of the setbacks that occur in life and readily bounce back for more."
However, he continues: "On the negative side, a three may be so delighted with the joy of living that the life becomes frivolous and superficial. You may scatter your abilities and express little sense of purpose. You are not very good at handling money. You spend it when you have it and don't when you don't."
3 MD Colin Tucker last week said the company will hit the market in November with 3G mobile phones that can send and receive video clips.
