Industrial Light and Magic, the special effects studio behind the Stars Wars films, has ditched its RISC-Unix workstations from SGI in favour of Intel-based Dell systems running Linux.
According to US newswires, the studio says the new workstations cost a fifth of the price of the SGI models, which it bought three years ago, and are three times faster.
The move is indicative of a general shift within Hollywood which is gradually phasing out the RISC workstations which traditionally provided the power to create magic on the silver screen.
