Camera makers Fujifilm and Olympus have announced another memory format, further complicating a crowded removable storage market.

The x-D picture card is less than an inch square and holds up to 8GB of data, and will be used to store pictures in digital cameras and other devices.

It is likely to replace the existing SmartMedia format favoured by both Fujifilm and Olympus, and further muddies the waters of a market already struggling under an excess of competing technologies, such as Sony's Memory Stick and Compact Flash.
