SONICblue has partnered with Intel to bring its ReplayTV platform to market next year as a 'coat-pocket-sized' portable video player (PVP).
The idea is ultimately to sell a consumer gadget that will dock with home entertainment equipment and then allow users to watch video content on the move. It could also be used for photo slide shows or music.
Dr Nikhil Balram, VP at SONICblue's Connected Home Products unit, predicts the device "will turn heads".
It connects via USB 2.0 or Ethernet to a docking station.
Intel will provide XScale mobile chips, the brains for the device, and video codecs.
Bob Hills, director of marketing at Intel's Emerging Platforms Lab, said the project is in line with the chip-maker's strategy of supplying "connectivity building blocks" and partnering with companies also focusing on convergence.
