Sony has announced the latest PlayStation2 sales figures, which indicate that the console is continuing to increase its user base.
The Japanese giant also boasted that it has hit its latest milestone with the all-conquering console - shipping its 40 millionth unit - just four and a half months after hitting the 30 million mark. The growth rate suggests Sony has suffered little from the launch of Microsoft's Xbox.
In Europe and the rest of the PAL region Sony has shifted 12.06 million consoles.
The number of PS2 consoles in Europe is sure to increase as the platform approaches its third Christmas. Not only has Sony recently announced a price cut for the console, but it is planning a major sales drive during the festive season on the back of major new games launches.
