Smart phone shipments are continuing to boom, with Nokia enjoying a record quarter for the devices.

Research firm Canalys has found that in the third quarter of this year, shipments of smart devices rose by 75 per cent, to just over 13 million devices.

Nokia has retained its lead as the number one smart phone seller, achieving a record quarter with more than seven million devices shipped. The Finnish mobile maker now has more than 54 per cent market share, according to Canalys.

While most of its smart devices are aimed squarely at the consumer segment, Nokia recently announced a range of business smart phones to boost its presence in the enterprise segment.

Canalys' research also found that Palm's smart phone market share has slipped slightly, by two per cent, leaving the Treo maker with just over eight per cent. Rival RIM, which makes the iconic BlackBerry, has risen to just over seven per cent.

The pair, however, made an unlikely friendship pact earlier this month, enabling owners of the Treo 650 to use RIM's BlackBerry email software.
