It probably would make sense for Google to focus on a wifi device, but mobile devices are soon to be the most common multifunction devices in the world. You can make and receive voice calls, compose and receive text messages. You can get online, access email, watch video clips, listen to radio feeds and search maps that use the devices gps capability. Take images and video that is geotagged using the devices gps capability. Play games via downloaded applications or online. Google has made Gmail and Google Maps accessible via mobile web and by downloadable applications. Google is also looking to do the same with its Docs & Spreadsheets service as well. Google is working on making Google Videos and YouTubes flash video format accessible via mobile which could lead to deals with major broadcasters. A mobile Firefox browser and mobile Picasa photo manager application would also expand the functionality of a Google branded device. The point is, Google knows that mobile device usage is going to surpass computer usage because of the smaller form factor and less expensive investment. Also, mobile phone signals are widespread where as wifi is not, especially in rural areas. The idea is that more customers can be accessed through mobile devices if you can provide them with the services and information they need to get things done or want for leisure purposes. This idea is not exclusive for the United States, Europe or Japan because there is a HUGE potential market in China and India that is growing more and more every day. So, it does make sense for Google to try to work from the mobile side to allow users to access its online content. I just hope that Google can provide a user experience that is pleasant and productive.
