I think your final summary is about right on this one. People will use whatever tool is most appropriate for the job. If i want to play around with some files on cubase then i won't be using anything other than a full-power PC and a big screen. But i won't be checking my connecting train times with it when the conductor announces that we're running late again; for that i use my mobile.
Basically the advertising side of the industry will always try and persuade us that one particular medium / technology / zeitgeist is on the way up and everything else is obsolete, but that's just marketing as it always has been.
We've now got a whole host of tools (different sized screens being one) that people will use as required. It would be interesting to see a line on your graph showing percentage of users with an increasing number of screens in the house.
