Compaq is teaming up with telecoms equipment manufacturer, Lucent to bundle messaging services on to its Proliant and Alpha servers.
Under the terms of the agreement, Compaq will resell the Octel Unified Messenger for Microsoft Exchange Server as well as integrate it onto its server platform as demand dictates. Unified Messenger works with both IP (Internet Protocol) and telephony networks and enables users to create, access and manage all their voice, email and fax messages from either a PC or telephone.
The Lucent product works specifically with Microsoft Exchange and has been on the market since 1997. According to Microsoft there are currently 25 million Exchange users worldwide.
