LAN server market poised for expansion

Improvements in price/performance ratios and new installations are the two main contributors to the growing LAN server market in Europe, according to a report released by Frost & Sullivan.

The marketing consulting company predicts this market will be worth nearly $5.5bn by 2005 - compared to just over $3bn in 1998.

In a marketplace dominated by Compaq with a third of total revenue, falling entry prices are making the products more accessible to SMEs, while storage and memory technologies are improving system performance.

The UK, Germany and France are the three largest regional markets for LAN servers in Europe and account for over 50 per cent of total market revenues.

The study also predicts that operating system Linux will move into second place behind NT overtaking Unix and Netware during the period.
