Intel 8-bit chipset to woo server market

The server market is poised to embrace Intel's 8-bit chipsets and start making significant profits from them, according to a recent report.

IDC predicts that by the end of September, more than ten server manufacturers will have introduced new computers based on Profusion - Intel's first 8-bit chipset.

Peter Lemons, an IDC research manager, said IBM and Compaq had never rallied around an 8-chip set before. "It looks like they've decided to let Intel own this bit of the market, and make money off volume sales instead," he told Silicon.com.

Intel bought in the design for Profusion as part of its purchase of Corollary, which was owned by Compaq amongst others.
