Sun Microsystems has shifted its server sales model by offering high-end customers a 'capacity on demand' programme.
The programme means servers will ship with multiple processors pre-installed, but with only some enabled. When the customer requires more computing power, Sun can levy extra fees, then 'switch on' the extra processors, saving engineer call-outs and hardware downtime.
The scheme will be seen first on its E1000 Starfire systems.
Meanwhile, the company has also launched the Enterprise 220R and 240R products, aimed at application service providers (ASPs) and ISPs.
