Private network host, Digital Island, has announced a global expansion plan, based on 5,000 new Sun servers and Inktomi's caching software.

As part of the deal, Sun will buy $20m of Digital Island stock and Inktomi will purchase $6m.

Digital Island had announced it wanted to expand its hosting network into 300 geographic areas by 2002. It plans to offer secure, fast access to international businesses which are frustrated by the lack of bandwidth available over the Net.
