Israel gets Orange WAP servers

Partner Communications - which runs the Orange GSM network in Israel - has signed a deal to use WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) server technology from eXaLink.

The agreement will allow users of Israel's newest mobile network to access WAP-enabled Internet content. eXaLink's RT-PACE server technology also allows Internet services in Hebrew.

In just under one year, Orange has captured about 300,000 subscribers, and claims the latest deal will allow Internet-based applications such as email, address and phone book, and scheduling while on the move.

Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa - until recently the largest stakeholder in the UK's Orange network - is the largest investor in Partner.

In related news, HP last Friday revealed what it claims is the first PC-based WAP server - a Windows NT NetServer running Nokia WAP software.
