Bill Clinton will start the new century with proposals for his 2001 budget calling for more research funding into information technology and supercomputers.
According to sources quoted in Reuters, the US President stated at the end of 1999 that if the US wanted its current prosperity to continue into the 21st century it must continue to encourage the creation and the spread of new technologies in its economy.
The blueprint for fiscal year 2001 - which will be unveiled in February's budget request - will follow advice from the presidential advisory council. The council have warned that the US is under-investing in IT research in areas such as the supercomputer which could help to model weather systems.
