IBM has upgraded OS/390, the operating system for its S/390 mainframe computers, to make them better suited for ecommerce and business-to-business applications.
The company said OS/390 will boost the ability of systems to deal with the requirements of ecommerce as it simplifies the process of translating Unix programs to the S/390, and improves connection to remote databases using Java.
OS/390 also supports high-level encryption hardware and can handle XML (eXtensible Markup Language) data.
IBM said it is also installing Linux on the S/390 server, claiming the open source OS is a vital component in Internet operations.
