HP increases its OpenView offering

The new venture, announced at HP's OpenView symposium in Berlin, marks the company's first foray into management solutions for the wireless market.

The software incorporates a Smart Plug-In (SPI) that enables mission-critical monitoring of wireless servers and applications to minimise server downtime.

The software was developed in collaboration with HP's partners in the wireless market: Nokia, Nextenso and Tantau and is aimed at the company's current telecom and service provider customers.

Jan Maarten Van Dongen, chief architect of the OpenView software business unit, said that the e-services market is becoming increasingly important for HP and this latest solution was just the first of future WAP projects by the company.

He said: "The wireless market is a key market. There are a lot of initiatives there. We want to be part of that whole environment, we need to be part of it."

The basic SPI technology has been adapted by each of the three partner companies to fit its own server environment.

The Nokia SPI is currently available through HP, while Nextenso are now selling their own SPI. The Tantau SPI is expected on the market by February 2001.
