HP may charge more for storage software

HP's OpenView storage software is being consolidated with software products offered by its hardware division, Network Storage Solutions Organisation.

The company will be aligning its software offerings under one umbrella to be called The Storage Joint Venture. However, HP's software will remain platform independent.

The announcement follows HP's December overhaul of the OpenView suite for roll-out in 2001.

George Bathurst, marketing manager at HP, said: "To bring together the company's disparate software offerings is becoming more strategic to HP. This decision creates more software products in their own right."

The wider restructuring has potential implications and software which was available for free may be charged for. However, Bathurst said that the storage side has been profitable to the company and job losses are therefore unlikely.
