The chip which Sun Microsystems dubbed the "processor for the dot-com world", looks to be heading in the same direction as many of the doomed start ups.

Users of Sun's SunBlade 1000 workstations using the UltraSparc III processor are being urged to download a patch from the PC giant's website, as they could be affected by a data corruption glitch.
The problem occurs when the SunBlade 1000s run floating-point applications, like those used in engineering applications, giving corrupted results and a five per cent drop in system performance.
The company said the problem only affected the initial batch of systems with the faulty chipset and had seen no further problems, either in the workstations or third-party servers that also contained the UltraSparc chip.
The Californian-based firm also said today it will team up with PeopleSoft to build and sell CRM (customer relationship management) solutions to the communications and brokerage industries.
Under the agreement, PeopleSoft will offer its enterprise CRM software for use on Sun's Solaris 8 operating system.
