Microsoft has won the rights to produce and host the official website for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Microsoft's internet unit MSN this week ended a two-month hunt to fill the void left following the April collapse of Quokka Sports, which produced the 2000 Summer Games site in association with the NBC television network.

In May, start-up managed service provider Logictier pulled out of a web hosting deal for the Salt Lake Olympics with only 275 days to go until the opening ceremony.

The website will feature, news reports, event standings and athlete biographies, and will be Microsoft's first major foray into producing sports content.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed
