Napster provokes music industry to make unrippable CDs

But will anyone want to buy them?

By Julian Goldsmith

Analysts have poured scorn on music industry attempts to nip the proliferation of Napster-like services in the bud by developing copy-proof CDs.

Bertelsmann, EMI, Sony, Universal Music and Warner are already running low profile field tests on CDs that cannot be copied or 'ripped' on a PC and then compressed through the MP3 file format which made Napster possible.

However, Jupiter analyst Aram Sinnreich told Reuters that copy protected CDs would provoke a consumer backlash.

He said: "Consumers are going to run screaming from these kinds of solution. This could be much more of a PR hazard for (the record labels) than Napster ever was."
