IBM has released a low-cost server boasting more processing power and storage than its rival from Dell.
The IBM eServer x200VL features a 850MHz Celeron processor and a 20GB IDE hard drive.
It also comes with IBM Director software for automating diagnostic and repair functions on the server.
IBM has put a $699 price tag on its new server.
However, its direct competitor from Dell, the PowerEdge 500SC server, offers 50MHz less and costs over $100 more. In addition, it fails to offer any diagnostic and management software.
Jim Gargan, vice president for IBM's eServer xSeries division claimed the company was able to match - and beat - Dell on price but that Dell could not touch the IBM technology.
IBM has recently pushed its Director Software across its entire server line putting it ahead of its competitors who do not offer server management software in such low level products.
