Digital music venture MusicNet has announced it has appointed former MTV executive Alan McGlade as CEO ahead of its official launch.

McGlade takes over from Rob Glaser, also CEO of RealNetworks, who had been in temporary charge of the venture.

MusicNet is a joint venture between AOL Time Warner, EMI, Bertelsmann and Real Networks to provide Napster-like digital music services over the web.

Both it and its rival PressPlay - a joint venture between Sony and Vivendi Universal - are currently facing regulatory scrutiny to determine if their businesses are potentially anti-competitive.
