IBM plans fresh assault on Sun

Server wars hot up...

IBM is stepping-up its assault on Sun with the introduction of its mid-range Unix p670 server line.

Big Blue toppled Sun to become the world's largest Unix server vendor last month according to IDC and is claiming that because the new servers use fewer chips than those of its arch-rival it can price the product 40 per cent cheaper.

The mid-range server market continues to be a hotspot as businesses shy-away from the more expensive high-end hardware.

Sun is expected to make respond later this week with the launch of its own new mid-range server.
