Cisco is back on the acquisition trail after it bought privately held software and hardware companies for $258m.
The internet bellwether has paid around $173m to gain the stock it does not already hold in IP software company Hammerhead Networks.
Hammerhead's 85 staff will join Cisco's Network Edge and Aggregation Routing group.
Cisco is also paying around $85m to complete the purchase of Ethernet networking firm Navarro Networks. The company's 25 staff will join Cisco's internet switching and services division.
Cisco CEO John Chambers earlier this week announced the company's intention to buy between eight and 12 companies this year.
This week's deals mark the end of the company's one-year hiatus in the acquisition market after spending $12bn on 23 takeovers during the tech boom year of 2000.
