IBM wins HP server battle

Feel the need for speed?

IBM has edged past HP to claim the crown in a series of intensive high-end server speed tests.

Big Blue's p690 Regatta server posted a score of 403,000 transactions per minute on a speed test called TPC-C, compares to a 389,000 score by HP's Superdome machine.

Last November, the performance of the Superdome server leapt after the company sacked an employee who admitted committing industrial sabotage.

Hock-Beng Lim confessed in September 2001 to cutting cables, reformatting hard disks and setting reset commands.

HP ploughed more than $1m into trying to get to the root of the problem.
