HP and Sun servers get lick of paint

And shiny new chips too...

HP and Sun are both increasing the speed of their mid-range Unix servers.

Sun claims customers should get 15 per cent better performance if they install 1.05GHz UltraSparc chips in place of those running at 900MHz.

Sun machines are also capable of running server boards at different speeds within the same box.

HP is offering a 875MHz chip in place of those running at 750MHz.

HP is also tweaking the way its 'utility pricing' works. This was introduced with the launch of the SuperDome machine - it allows IT directors to install extra processors on servers but only be charged for the time they use them.

The new system will allow users to decrease as well as increase capacity - processors are turned off once they have dealt with the peak in demand.
