Electronics giants, Matsushita Electric and Toshiba, have joined up with SanDisk to develop storage cards that can be used for downloading information from the Internet and then transferred to a range of digital consumer products.

The flash-memory-based cards will be capable of storing up to 256MB of video and audio data for devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants and cameras. The technology will also use SDMI compliant security and copy protection software.

The first product to hit the market will appear in the second half of next year and will initially have 32MB or 64MB capacity, with the 256MB capacity to follow in 2001.
