Dell Computers is to buy storage area networking company, ConvergeNet, in a $340m stock deal.
Dell's storage products currently only run on its own servers. But the takeover will enable it to sell its products into a open environment for the first time.
Thanks to ConvergeNet's SAN technology, Dell's PowerVault will connect to any Intel or RISC-based server running UNIX, Solaris, Windows NT or Linux, alongside other storage systems.
The California-based start-up will also provide Dell with management software that offers storage monitoring for any server on the SAN.
The deal is due to be completed before the end of November.
